World Record Egg Hunt

Artist Julia Rogers has just recently completed her large Egg that will become part of the largest record breaking Egg Hunt taking place through out London from Tues 21st Feb to 8th April 2012.

The Egg will be one of 200 to be hidden in shop windows, famous landmarks, cultural venues, outdoor spaces and train stations. Finally there will be an auction and an online auction raising funds for Action for Children and The Elephant Family. Visit www.thebigegghunt.co.uk for further details.

INSET Sessions at OHOS

Staff from St Martin's Primary School in Caversham spent a day at the studios. They got to grips with new techniques that will feed back into their teaching practice with help from artists Kate and Jon Lockhart.
As well as touring the studio and meeting artists at work, the teachers enjoyed hands on printmaking and feltmaking workshops, whilst discussing thematic approaches for the classroom such as 'Mantle of the Expert'. One member of staff commented that: "It was the best INSET that I have ever been on"

Teachers Twilight Art Workshops at The Keep

Open Hand Open Space Studios have been leading a season of twilight teacher training sessions. The sessions are a strand of 'Artifacts' an Arts Council England and Reading Borough Council initiative to work with Museum collections, artists and schools.
Each week, staff explore materials, techniques and themes that directly relate to their classroom practice whilst also enabling the development of their own creativity.

OHOS artist Ingrid Jensen is pleased to have two films included in an installation by the London based group of Artists AM Bruno. One of the films features OHOS artist Anna Mitchell. All 101 individual film works by 40 artists are silent and of exactly 101 seconds duration, screened on an array of monitors positioned throughout the space. The project was developed and co-ordinated by Sophie Loss and John McDowall, with additional supervision by Joanna Hill and help from Judy Goldhill, Claire Deniau and Steve Perfect.

OHOS artist exhibits work in Terminal 5

In the doom and gloom of the current economic climate, Kate Lockhart’s painting of the London skyline shines like a beacon of positivity, radiant on the walls of Terminal 5. The magnificent, explosively powerful 360-degree view is depicted in a 22 metre full scale mirrored print of the original painting and is currently on show in the brand new wing (Gate C) of T5.

A large section of the original painting can also be seen at the Terminal 5 EXPO Fine Art Gallery.

Heritage Open Days at the Keep

Reading Borough Council has agreed to work with OHOS & Reading Space Studios to prepare a £1m Heritage Lottery bid to restore the Keep as an arts centre, and to provide an immediate £90K to deal with essential fire-safety requirements. Very many thanks to all Councillors for supporting this project, and especial thanks to Councillor Tom Stanway, Lisa Pearce and Steve Hicks for all their work preparing the proposal. Thank you too to all our other supporters, including Richard Stainthorp, Reading's Cultural Partnership Arts Representative.

Wilson Primary School

OHOS member Jon Lockhart is currently working with Reading Borough Council and Arts Council England at Wilson Primary School. The project is exploring the broadening of community links through creativity. The school which is only a minutes walk from OHOS's Keep headquarters has recently been awarded an Outstanding Ofsted report. Staff from the school will be using the studios for their professional development and it is hoped that students will be able to use the studios for Artsaward training in the near future.

The People's Museum at Battle Library, Reading

The People's Museum Touring Exhibition created by OHOS member Jon Lockhart is currently on show at The Battle Library. The project invited members of the public to bring along an object of significant importance to them. Jon then helped participants to draw the objects which were also photographed. The drawings and photographs are presented along side a written description of each item in 'The People's Museum'
The exhibition is open during library hours.

Egyptian Baboons at Cliveden

OHOS sculptor Petre Nikoloski has used his expert skills assist with conservation of a historic pair of granite baboons at Cliveden. Thought to be 2000 to 2500 years old, the baboons were originally part of an Egyptian temple entrance. Viscount Astor acquired them in the 19th century and they have been in private ownership until their recent donation to the National Trust. Geriatric Miniatures by Sarah Britten-Jones has been selected for the 2010 Salisbury Art Centre Open, with the private view taking place on Monday 8 November 2010 from 6.30pm. The exhibition continues from Tuesday 9 November until Wednesday 8 December 2010.

Sarah trained as a ceramicist, and sources conceptual and physical material from her environment or situation, manipulating it to reveal truths that are often denied or hidden. She is interested in the stories we tell ourselves in order to live, and investigates how these self-narratives are exercised and take form through the things we create and consume. Her work often provides an antithesis to the dominant storyline.

Manual Labour - Jon Lockhart - Modern Art Oxford

To coincide with the publication of his book Manual Labour, Jon Lockhart will be exhibiting
in the new Project Space at Modern Art Oxford this autumn.
Lockhart’s installations are a mix of ready-made items forced into new readings, not only
by their placing within the Gallery but through their alignment with one another. His
installations often convey a sense of the laboratory, as though one is witnessing
something that has recently taken place. Sound and digital mechanics are also a strong
component in the work, as is a playful use of graphics and design.
To launch his debut book Manual Labour, Lockhart will lead a panel discussion on
Thursday 18 November discussing the merits and issues that arise out of practice that
acknowledges the contribution made by non-artists who inform, positively influence and
contribute to the production of their work. The panel will include presentations by fellow
artists Joshua Sofaer, Katy Beinart and Melanie Manchot,

Emily Vicary

Emily, who lives in Reading, was awarded residencies at OpenHand OpenSpace in 2007 and 2009, and has now been appointed as an Exhibitions Intern at South Hill Park Arts Centre in Bracknell. She plans to continue making sculptural work and hopes to complete an MA next year.

In 2007, she and her peers curated the group show ‘20 BELLOWS’ which took place in the Keep. The show demonstrated a re-thinking of various lo-brow and craft based mediums, such as carving space ships into wood.

In 2009, following her graduation from the Ruskin School, University of Oxford, Emily used her studio and the project space in the Keep to prepare for a group show named ‘FADEINS’ at The Barn in Reading. This granted her a fairly smooth transition between the private world of the Ruskin to the vast space outside.

Hot Air

During November and December 150 paper balloons will be collected together at The Keep and prepared for an installation in the Museum of Reading as part of the RGA's exhibition Eighty! 9 January - 21 March 2010. The balloons are a festive and inclusive way of celebrating the RGA's eightieth year as an active art group in Reading, with every member being invited to make one and use it as a canvas. The installation also represents artists' ideas and aspirations, whch are ever vulnerable to the pricks and constraints of daily life. But balloons may also suggest hot air, and there will be an open session on overheated discussions in the art world in March 2010.
Completed balloons may be delivered to The Keep, 571 Oxford Road on Sunday 29 November 2009, 2-4pm. Ingrid Jensen will also be happy to offer practical help then to RGA members who have yet to complete their part of the project. Later delivery days may be arranged as necessary.

Drawn to Dance

Drawing to dance

A performance devised from a workshop between visual artists Carla Conte, Shehnoor Ahmed and Gina Field; Kathak dancer Manuela Benini and sound artist Fari Bradley. The resulting piece was an improvised drawing performance which was a response to the choreographed movement of the dancer, a composition of music and the dimentions of the paper canvas frames. The piece was performed live at Asia electronica and evening of performance, art, installations and music. The project was funded by RISC and OHOS. We are hoping to develop this idea of drawing to dance, exploring futher materials, mediums and narrative between the three performers.
